When MongoDB Atlas fails

MongoDB Atlas runs managed MongoDB clusters on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. A cluster can fail in one cloud region while Atlas answers, and the Atlas UI and API can fail while clusters keep serving queries.

We check the Atlas control plane, its UI and Admin API. Your clusters run apart from it: they can fail while both answer, and keep running when they do not.

If MongoDB Atlas is not working for you

  1. Find what fails for you among the services we monitor above. If that service is green, the problem is likely on your side: try the next steps.
  2. Open mongodb.com on another network, such as mobile data. If it works there, the problem is your connection, your DNS or your VPN.
  3. Update or restart the app, then sign out and back in.
  4. Look for an incident on one feature on status.mongodb.com.

Questions about MongoDB Atlas outages.

Is MongoDB Atlas down right now?

The status at the top of this page comes from Hyperping checks of MongoDB Atlas, run every minute and refreshed on the page every 60 seconds. Green means the latest checks succeeded; red means they are failing, confirmed from several regions.

How do you check MongoDB Atlas?

We monitor 2 MongoDB Atlas services every minute, in turn from Virginia, Frankfurt and Singapore: Atlas UI (cloud.mongodb.com, up on a successful response) and Atlas Admin API (cloud.mongodb.com, up on a 401 response). When a check fails, other regions check again before that service counts as down. MongoDB Atlas counts as down when all of them are, and as partly down when only some are. We check the Atlas control plane, its UI and Admin API. Your clusters run apart from it: they can fail while both answer, and keep running when they do not.

MongoDB Atlas is up here but not working for me. Why?

An outage can be partial: one feature, one app, one country or one internet provider, and our checks see MongoDB Atlas from data centers. Try another network such as mobile data, update or restart the app, and check the official status page for an incident on one feature.

Does MongoDB Atlas have an official status page?

Yes, status.mongodb.com. MongoDB Atlas's team updates it by hand, so it can lag behind the start of an outage; our checks run every minute whatever it says.

Can I get alerted when MongoDB Atlas goes down?

Yes. Create a free Hyperping account and add cloud.mongodb.com as a monitor: you are alerted by email, Slack or your other channels within a minute of a failure. The free plan includes 20 monitors, enough for your own site and the services it depends on.
