When Jira fails

Jira is Atlassian's issue and project tracker. Each Jira site runs on its own instance, so an incident often hits some sites and regions only, which Atlassian reports on the Jira status page.

Every company has its own Jira site, yourcompany.atlassian.net, so we check what they share: the Atlassian Cloud API and Jira's page on atlassian.com. Atlassian sign-in answers automated checks with a bot wall. Your own site can fail while all of this answers.

If Jira is not working for you

  1. Find what fails for you among the services we monitor above. If that service is green, the problem is likely on your side: try the next steps.
  2. Open atlassian.com on another network, such as mobile data. If it works there, the problem is your connection, your DNS or your VPN.
  3. Update or restart the app, then sign out and back in.
  4. Look for an incident on one feature on jira-software.status.atlassian.com.

Questions about Jira outages.

Is Jira down right now?

The status at the top of this page comes from Hyperping checks of Jira, run every minute and refreshed on the page every 60 seconds. Green means the latest checks succeeded; red means they are failing, confirmed from several regions.

How do you check Jira?

We monitor 2 Jira services every minute, in turn from Virginia, Frankfurt and Singapore: Atlassian Cloud API (api.atlassian.com, up on a 401 response) and Jira on atlassian.com (www.atlassian.com, up on a successful response). When a check fails, other regions check again before that service counts as down. Jira counts as down when all of them are, and as partly down when only some are. Every company has its own Jira site, yourcompany.atlassian.net, so we check what they share: the Atlassian Cloud API and Jira's page on atlassian.com. Atlassian sign-in answers automated checks with a bot wall. Your own site can fail while all of this answers.

Jira is up here but not working for me. Why?

An outage can be partial: one feature, one app, one country or one internet provider, and our checks see Jira from data centers. Try another network such as mobile data, update or restart the app, and check the official status page for an incident on one feature.

Does Jira have an official status page?

Yes, jira-software.status.atlassian.com. Jira's team updates it by hand, so it can lag behind the start of an outage; our checks run every minute whatever it says.

Can I get alerted when Jira goes down?

Yes. Create a free Hyperping account and add api.atlassian.com as a monitor: you are alerted by email, Slack or your other channels within a minute of a failure. The free plan includes 20 monitors, enough for your own site and the services it depends on.
