If you are comparing Opsgenie and PagerDuty in 2026, you are almost certainly an Opsgenie customer with a deadline. Atlassian shuts the product down on April 5, 2027, and PagerDuty is the name most teams write down first.

PagerDuty is the deeper product. It has more integrations, more routing logic, more analytics, and an AI layer Opsgenie never had. It also costs $21 per user per month on Professional against $9.45 on Opsgenie Essentials, so a team that paid Opsgenie for schedules and paging will pay PagerDuty at least twice as much for features it may never open.

Hyperping belongs in the comparison as the third option because it covers the part of Opsgenie most teams actually used, on-call schedules, escalation policies, SMS and phone alerts, and adds the uptime monitoring and status page that both Opsgenie and PagerDuty leave to other vendors. It does not have PagerDuty's integration catalog, Event Orchestration, or AIOps.

Quick verdict

Choose PagerDuty if you need Event Orchestration to route thousands of events, an AIOps layer to group them, integrations with ServiceNow or a SIEM, or a formal incident process with roles, tasks, and workflows. It is the safest choice for a large SRE organization that keeps its existing monitoring stack, and the free migration hours make the first three weeks cheaper.

Choose Jira Service Management if your incidents already live in Jira and you need ITSM workflows around them. The JSM comparison explains why that is a sideways move for most engineering teams.

Choose Hyperping if you used Opsgenie for schedules, escalation, and paging, you were feeding it alerts from an uptime monitor, and you want one flat bill. A 10-person team pays $92 per month on Pro with two extra seats, against $210 on PagerDuty Professional, and gets 250 monitors and three status pages in the same subscription.

On-call scheduling and escalation

Both products do the core job well. The differences are in limits and in how much configuration sits behind a schedule.

Opsgenie let you build layered rotations and escalation chains on every tier, including Free. That is the setup most migrants need to carry over, and it is the part PagerDuty's own migration utilities say they map: "active on-call schedules, user profiles, and escalation paths" (PagerDuty community, June 2026).

PagerDuty adds a layer Opsgenie never had. Professional includes two predefined incident roles and three incident types. Enterprise raises that to 10 custom roles, up to 100 custom incident types, incident tasks, and workflows with conditionals, loops, and delays. If your incident process has an incident commander, a communications lead, and a checklist, PagerDuty models it.

Hyperping's escalation policies chain steps with delays: Slack immediately, SMS after five minutes, a phone call after ten. A schedule can be the recipient of any step, so the person on rotation is the one paged. Essentials includes one schedule, Pro three, and Business has no published cap. There are no incident roles or task lists.

Alert routing and noise reduction

This is where PagerDuty pulls away, and where an Opsgenie Essentials team should ask whether it matters to them.

Opsgenie capped routing rules at one on Free and Essentials. Teams on those tiers routed everything to one policy, which is why so many of them never touched the routing features PagerDuty sells. Standard raised the cap to 100 rules and added alert policies for deduplication and delays.

PagerDuty's Event Orchestration handles conditional routing across services, time windows, and severities. AIOps is a separate add-on; incident.io's 2026 comparison lists it at $699 per month, and PagerDuty Advance, the AI assistant, at $415 per month beyond the included actions. PagerDuty cites a Forrester study claiming up to 91% noise reduction with AIOps. If you process a few hundred alerts a month, that add-on costs more than your whole on-call bill.

Hyperping reduces noise at the source rather than after ingestion. A monitor failure triggers an immediate recheck from every selected region, and an outage opens only after confirmation. Monitor groups combine related failures so a shared dependency produces one alert. There is no rules engine for events sent from other tools beyond webhook routing to an escalation policy.

Opsgenie Standard's unlimited US and Canada SMS and voice was one of its underrated features. PagerDuty's public pricing page itemizes only the Free quota of 100 notifications per month and says paid plans include "more". Ask for the exact number in writing before signing, especially if responders are outside the US where per-message rates apply.

Hyperping includes phone calls on every paid plan and sells SMS in credits: 20 on Essentials, 75 on Pro, 200 on Business, then $5 per 20. That fits a team paged a few times a week, not a team paged dozens of times a night. Hyperping has no native mobile app; alerts reach phones through calls, SMS, and Slack or Teams push.

Heartbeats and monitoring

Neither Opsgenie nor PagerDuty checks your endpoints. This is the gap that turns a one-tool decision into a two- or three-tool decision.

Opsgenie's heartbeats paged you when a backup job, a pipeline, or a cron task stopped checking in. It was the closest Opsgenie came to monitoring, and PagerDuty does not publish an equivalent. On PagerDuty you send the heartbeat to a cron-monitoring service and route its failure into PagerDuty, which adds a vendor and an integration to maintain.

Hyperping runs the checks itself. Monitors run every 30 seconds on Essentials and Pro and every 20 seconds on Business, from 18 regions on every plan. Healthchecks replace Opsgenie heartbeats one for one. Playwright browser checks cover login and checkout flows, and a Linux and macOS agent collects CPU, memory, disk, and network. There are no logs or traces; if incident diagnosis needs those, keep your observability tool.

Opsgenie customers who ran a public status page bought Statuspage separately. That subscription survives the shutdown, so the status page is not part of the deadline, but it stays a second bill.

PagerDuty added status pages to its plans. Professional includes an external page with 250 subscribers, Business adds an internal page and 500 subscribers, and Enterprise reaches 1,000. Premium status pages are a paid add-on; incident.io's comparison puts 1,000 subscribers at $1,068 per year. That is progress compared with the old model, though a customer-facing page for a SaaS with a few thousand subscribers still means an add-on.

Hyperping's pages are the same product as the monitors. Monitors map to services, an outage creates an incident, and the page updates and notifies subscribers by email, Slack, or SMS. Essentials includes one page with a custom domain, Pro three pages with password protection, and Business ten pages with white labeling, SSO, and IP allowlisting.

Opsgenie's tiering pushed teams toward Standard: Essentials capped incidents at 100 a month and postmortems at five. PagerDuty tiering pushes toward Business for custom fields, the analytics dashboard, and multi-year data. Read the tier ladder before assuming Professional replaces Opsgenie Standard.

Hyperping opens incidents from monitor failures and lets you write manual incidents on the status page. Business adds MTTA and MTTR reporting. There is no custom-field model or postmortem editor inside the product.

PagerDuty's catalog is the largest in the category and the strongest argument for it. If Datadog, Splunk, ServiceNow, and a SIEM all send events, PagerDuty has a maintained integration for each. Opsgenie's 200+ covered the common stack and had the deepest Jira link.

Hyperping is narrower by design. Alert channels are native, monitoring alerts come from Hyperping's own checks, and the Opsgenie and PagerDuty integrations let you forward alerts during a migration. The MCP server exposes monitors, outages, on-call, and incident metrics to AI assistants. The Terraform provider is community maintained.

Pricing and cost predictability

Opsgenie and PagerDuty both charge per user. The difference is the rate and the add-ons.

The first row is where PagerDuty Free is a real answer. Five users, one schedule, one policy, and 100 notifications a month cover a small team, and the price is zero. The moment you need a second schedule or a sixth person, the bill jumps to $105.

The second row is the typical Opsgenie Standard customer. PagerDuty Professional costs about the same as Standard did, so the per-user rate itself is not the tax. The tax is what stays outside: the uptime monitor and the status page you still pay for, and the add-ons if you want AIOps. Hyperping's $92 includes 250 monitors and three status pages.

The third row shows the Business tier gap. Custom fields, the analytics dashboard, and multi-year data cost $41 per user, so 25 responders pay $1,025 a month before AIOps. Hyperping Business is $309 with 20 seats included and five extra, ten status pages, and 1,000 monitors, and it does not have custom fields or a comparable analytics suite.

What PagerDuty's Opsgenie migration offer actually includes

PagerDuty published two offers, and the fine print matters.

The Summer 2026 promotional offer applies to customers who buy the Operations Cloud Core plan. It is "limited to the first fifty (50) qualifying customers", provides "up to eighty (80) Expert Service Hours over the first 3 weeks", covers configurations of "up to 250 active users", and is "only valid until June 1, 2028". Configurations with ServiceNow or complex custom dependencies are "entirely outside the standard migration framework" and require paid services. Start dates depend on professional services capacity.

The community offer is smaller: free migration support "for implementations under 5 hours" for organizations up to 100 users, including user and team migration, up to 3 monitoring integrations, up to 25 services, escalation policies, and schedules. Larger migrations go through a scoping consultation with discounts "for qualified cases".

I noticed one inconsistency across PagerDuty's own pages. The community post says its utilities "map active on-call schedules, user profiles, and escalation paths directly into PagerDuty configurations". Its Opsgenie alternative guide says "schedules, escalation policies, and integrations usually need to be re-created or mapped". Plan for the second statement and treat automated import as a bonus.

Hyperping's migration service is free on any paid plan. Send the Opsgenie export or a screen share, and the team rebuilds monitors, heartbeats as healthchecks, escalation policies, schedules, alert channels, and the status page within 48 hours, then hands over on a 30-minute call. There is no customer cap and no hour budget, because the setups are smaller than a 250-user PagerDuty deployment.

If your alert volume needs a rules engine and machine-learning grouping, if your incident process needs roles and tasks, or if ServiceNow has to open the ticket, buy PagerDuty. Hyperping does not offer those capabilities.

What each platform genuinely lacks

Opsgenie: a shutdown date. No uptime monitoring, no status page, one routing rule below Standard, 100 incidents and five postmortems a month on Essentials. Reporting drew complaints in reviews. After April 5, 2027, none of it runs.

PagerDuty: no uptime monitoring and no published heartbeat monitor, so the monitoring stack stays separate. Notification quotas on paid plans are not itemized publicly. Custom fields, analytics, and multi-year data sit on Business at $41 per user. AIOps and PagerDuty Advance are add-ons priced above most small teams' whole bill. Reviewers describe a dense interface and defaults that page by call, text, and push at once.

Hyperping: no native mobile app, no event rules engine, no AIOps, no incident roles or custom fields, no ServiceNow integration, and a community-maintained Terraform provider. SMS is sold in credits. Browser checks run every five minutes with per-plan caps. Metrics retention tops out at 30 days on Business.

What G2 reviewers say

G2 lists PagerDuty at 4.5 out of 5 across roughly 950 reviews and Opsgenie at 4.3 out of 5 across about 50 reviews, as of September 2026. G2's own pros-and-cons summary for PagerDuty lists expensive pricing, a cluttered interface, and alert overload as the most common complaints.

The pattern across both sets matches the pricing tables. PagerDuty reviewers trust the paging and pay for it. Opsgenie reviewers liked the simplicity and the price, and the ones who wanted more moved up to PagerDuty. The buyers in the middle, who want Opsgenie's simplicity without the shutdown, are the ones Hyperping is built for.

How to use Hyperping to replace Opsgenie

1. Import the monitors that fed Opsgenie

Recreate the HTTP, port, ping, DNS, keyword, and SSL checks that were sending alerts into Opsgenie from your uptime tool. Pick regions close to your customers from the 18 available. Turn every Opsgenie heartbeat into a healthcheck: give each cron job or pipeline its ping URL and a grace period, and Hyperping pages you when it stops reporting.

2. Rebuild schedules and escalation policies

Recreate each rotation with its timezone handoffs, time restrictions, and vacation overrides. Then build escalation policies with steps and delays, Slack first, SMS after five minutes, a phone call after ten, and attach a schedule to each step so only the person on rotation is woken. Essentials includes one schedule, Pro three, Business has no published cap.

3. Reconnect alert sources through integrations

Point Datadog, Prometheus, CloudWatch, and custom webhooks at Hyperping's webhook endpoint or replace them with native checks where the check and the routing are the same system. Keep the Opsgenie integration active during the parallel run so both tools receive every alert. If part of the company stays on PagerDuty, the PagerDuty integration forwards Hyperping alerts there.

4. Publish a status page on your own domain

Map monitors to services and sections, point a CNAME at cname.hyperping.io for automatic SSL, and add manual components for dependencies you do not monitor. Outages and manual incidents update the page and notify subscribers by email, Slack, or SMS. If you ran Statuspage beside Opsgenie, the importer brings components and subscribers across.

5. Run both platforms in parallel, then cut over

Trigger test alerts through every escalation path for two to four weeks and compare delivery, acknowledgement, and routing against Opsgenie. Use MTTA and MTTR on Business to confirm response time did not regress. Disable Opsgenie routing once the team is confident, export a final configuration backup, and cancel before April 5, 2027. Migrating to Hyperping

Opsgenie exports schedules, escalation policies, and routing rules through its REST API; the UI only exports alert history. Pull the JSON now, even if you have not chosen a platform, because everything left in Opsgenie is deleted on April 5, 2027. Then either rebuild it yourself with the migration checklist or send it to the free migration service and validate the result in a parallel run.

Event Orchestration rules, custom fields, incident roles, and AIOps grouping have no equivalent in Hyperping and do not transfer. Map your current routing rules before you commit and check that per-monitor escalation policies cover them.

Testing before you commit

PagerDuty Free covers 5 users, one schedule, one escalation policy, and 100 notifications a month with no time limit. Use it to test the mobile app and the paging flow. Test Professional if you need a second schedule or the status page, and get the notification quota for your tier in writing.

Opsgenie has no trial to run; it stopped selling in June 2025. Your existing account is the baseline. Export its configuration first.

Hyperping's free plan covers 20 monitors, one server agent, healthchecks, and one status page with no time limit. Every paid plan has a 14-day trial, and on-call starts on Essentials.

Point PagerDuty and Hyperping at the same alerts for two weeks. Record which product delivers the page first, whether the right person is woken, how many duplicate alerts appear, what it costs to add the sixth responder, and how many other subscriptions the setup still needs.
